March 2025: a page size that would not change
Adam was writing a manuscript in Google Docs and hit the wall every self-publishing author hits. A book is not A4. A paperback is 5x8, or 6x9, or one of a dozen trim sizes a printer expects, and Google Docs offered none of them. So on 31 March 2025 he built the thing that was missing: Page Sizer, a Google Docs add-on that sets exact page dimensions and margins, with presets for Amazon KDP paperback and hardcover trim sizes. He wrote it for himself and published it free, because other writers were stuck at the same wall.
March 2026: four books at once
A year later the problem had changed shape. Adam was finalising his first set of programming books, four of them at once. Page size was no longer the hard part. Making a book at all was the hassle. Drafting in one tool, tracking chapter order by hand, wrestling front and back matter, exporting, then discovering the export was wrong and starting again. Multiply that by four and the cost stops being an annoyance and becomes the job itself.
17 March 2026: the decision, made mid-struggle
An add-on could fix a page size. It could not fix the shape of the work. So on 17 March 2026, three days before those books shipped, Adam bought panulat.com and started planning a book creation application of his own. He was still finishing those four books when he decided he would not do it this way again. There is something fitting in it: it took writing books about building software to decide that the software for building books did not exist yet.
20 May 2026: development starts
Panulat became a desktop studio where planning, writing, chapter organisation, preview, PDF and EPUB all live together. Your book is yours: keep it on your machine, or push it to GitHub with the built-in Source Control. And there is no page size you cannot set, because the whole thing started with one that would not change.
